Music Statement of INTENT

Why do we teach this? Why do we teach it in the way we do?

At Spire Infant School we value Music as an important part of the children’s entitlement to a broad and balanced curriculum. Music is a language that can be accessed by almost everyone. It can be used through all areas of learning, offering the opportunity to experience, create and share ideas. Music, song and dance can stimulate parts of the brain responsible for language development, maths, logic and spatial awareness, creativity, self- expression and research shows how it can sustain and support well-being. Children listen with concentration and understanding to a range of high-quality live and recorded music. We encourage children to understand the value and importance of music in the wider community, and to use their musical skills, knowledge, and experiences to involve themselves in music, in a variety of different contexts.

We aim for all pupils to:

  • Be able to describe musical elements using a range of musical vocabulary
  • Perform, listen, review and evaluate music
  • Understand and explore how music is created, produced and communicated through the interrelated dimensions: pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, structure and appropriate musical notations
  • Confidently perform either singing or skilfully playing an instrument, either solo or as part of a group
  • Compose and create music with rhythmic patterns and an awareness of timbre and duration

At Spire, our aim is to implement this INTENT through quality first Teaching & Learning.
