Starfish newsletter

Autumn Term 1 Newsletter                                    Starfish Class

Mrs Edwards, Mrs Hill and Mrs Goodlad.

Welcome to Starfish Class!

We hope that you have had a good summer. We will be sending out a class newsletter every half-term so that you can keep up to date with what your child is learning about.

Our topic this half-term is called ‘Dinosaurs’. In Literacy we will be looking at factual books and power points and learning how to write a factual piece of information. We will also be looking at dinosaur poems and reading stories about dinosaurs. We will be concentrating on making our sentences more interesting by adding describing words and joining words, as well as our on-going skills of full stops, capital letters, exclamation marks, question marks and finger spaces. If your child does any writing at home please help them to remember these things. When we do a ‘Big Write’ the children will always set themselves a target to work on for next time. Whenever they have completed this we put the work on our writing wall in the classroom so please feel free to look at your child’s work with them to see how they are improving each time.

In maths, we will be looking at place value, shape and measure, as well as our on-going skills of addition and subtraction.

PE: PE takes place on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Please make sure that your child has a fully named PE kit in class as our school spares stock is very limited. If your child wears ear-rings, please help them to remove them on these days. We send the kit home at the end of every half-term for washing.

Morning work: We encourage and welcome parents to support their children each morning with their morning work. The bell will ring at 8.55am for registration.

Our library morning is Monday.

Homework and Spellings.

It has been proven that the best education a child can have is one formed from a strong partnership between home and school. We will keep a record of who has returned their homework and at the end of the term children will receive a treat if they return it every week. Homework and spellings will be sent home on a Friday and are expected to be returned by the following Friday. If you wish to keep the spellings at home until the Friday morning so that your child can keep practising them, we have found that this works well.

Thank you for your support.

Reading at home.

We would just like to clarify exactly what we mean by reading three times at home. If your child has read at school this is not included in their three times at home. Also we understand that children may not want to read their reading book all of the time, but any reading that they do will count towards their three times at home. If they look at one of their own books, a magazine, a poster, a recipe or any kind of writing, include this in their reading record and it will go towards their three times at home reading target.

Dates for your Diary.

Tuesday 20th October (am) Starfish Class assembly. Tuesday 20th and Wednesday 21st October. Parent consultation evenings. A grid will go up nearer to the time for you to make your appointment.
