Starfish Class Newsletter Summer 5

Summer 5 Newsletter Starfish Class

Welcome back to everyone. We hope that you have all had a good break.

Our topic this term is ‘Make a Splash!’ We will be reading ‘Rainbow Fish’ and writing our own version of the story, as well as reading and writing information texts on the Titanic disaster. The children will also be learning about the local area and comparing it to a seaside resort, doing lots of scientific experiments and celebrating the Queen’s 90th Birthday

In maths, we’ll be returning to subtraction, place value, multiplication and division, as well as learning about position, direction, temperature and money.

Homework, reading and spellings and a special plea. Thank you very much to those of you who are supporting your child with homework, reading and spellings – it makes such a positive difference to their learning. Last term, there were only six children who completed their homework every single week. We can’t stress enough how important your support is, particularly in the run-up to SATs, as many of the tasks we set are based around SATs practise papers. We teach the fundamentals of how to read and write in class but practise is what makes perfect! Homework is handed out every Friday and then your child has until the following Friday to complete it. When it is returned, please ensure that it is ticked off on the homework grid at the back of the classroom. Your child will receive a treat at the end of the half term if this has been done every week.

SATS So that the children aren’t too overwhelmed, SATs will be split over two weeks rather than the traditional one. English based tests will be 9-11 May and maths 16-17 May and will take place in the mornings only. We will not be sending out any homework during this time. We share your concerns about SATs and will do whatever we can to try and make the experience as relaxed as possible.

Intervention groups Morning intervention groups will continue apart from when SATs are taking place. Please make sure that your child arrives promptly so that they get the most out of these sessions.

Library morning Our library morning is on a Monday. Once your child has chosen a book, please return with him/her to the classroom to register it and then you are welcome to stay for morning work.
