Starfish class newsletter

Spring 1 Newsletter Starfish Class

Mrs Edwards, Mrs Dale and Mrs Goodlad.

Welcome back! We hope that you had a wonderful Christmas and would like to wish you all a very Happy New Year! As you will have read in the letter before Christmas, we will be welcoming Mrs Dale to teach in our class on a Thursday and Friday due to Mrs Hill moving across to teach in Rainbow Fish class after Mrs Tazzyman’s departure.  Mrs Dale is a very experienced teacher who the children know well and she is looking forward to working with you and your children.

Last term the children really enjoyed our ‘To Infinity and Beyond’ topic and this term we will be learning about the polar regions in our topic ‘Brr it’s cold’. Some of the exciting activities that we have planned include investigating the best ways to melt ice, finding out about the life of Scott of the Antarctic and constructing weather-proof shelters.  We will also be celebrating Chinese New Year and are looking forward to starting Forest Schools aswell!

In our English lessons, we will be reading the stories of The Stick Man and the Gruffalo’s Child, as well as reading non-fiction texts about the Arctic and the Antarctic, where they are located and who lives there. As ever, we will be concentrating on making our sentences more interesting by adding adjectives and joining words, as well as our on-going skills of full stops, capital letters, exclamation marks, question marks and finger spaces. For your children to achieve to the best of their potential, it is essential that they include all of these in each piece of writing that they do.  If they do any writing at home please help them to remember these things.

In maths we will be looking at counting in steps of 2, 3, 5 and 10 both forwards and backwards, place value, mass, geometry, addition and subtraction and multiplication and division.

Our first SATs practise week will take place w/c 1st February. Please will you support your child by making sure that they have plenty of rest and bring their water bottles to school with them?  We will be reassuring the children that whilst they will need to do their best, we will try to ensure that the week is as relaxed as possible for them. We won’t be sending any spellings or homework home on Friday 29th January.

We would just like to take this opportunity to say thank you so much for all of your support with your children’s learning as it makes such a positive difference. Thank you also for your attendance at events such as the Decoration Day, class performances and coffee mornings.  It is very much appreciated by all of us at Spire Infants.

Forest Schools

Every Monday afternoon from 25th January, Starfish Class will be attending Forest Schools for a six week period, which will be led by Mrs Kirkwood.  If your child can bring in a named pair of wellies from home each week that will be much appreciated.  The children will wear waterproof clothing provided by school and always get a lot out of these sessions.

PE Kits

Please can you ensure that your child has a full, named PE kit in school at all times? There are still several children without a full PE kit. We do PE at least once a week and it is important that the children have the correct clothing to let them move properly and also to keep them safe. The children love PE and it supports them with team-work, competition, focus, commitment and health and fitness so it is so important that they are able to take part in full.   Thank you for your support.

Morning work target groups

From 4th January, Mrs Goodlad / Miss Storer will be inviting some of the children to work with them during our morning work sessions.  If your child is one of the children taking part, please ensure that they arrive promptly at 8.40 so that they get the best from these sessions.  Feel free to leave your child to work with their group as this will help him / her to achieve the independence that is needed for Year 2 work.

Classroom helpers

If any of you are able to come in to school in the afternoons to listen to the children read, make resources or work with a small group of children you would be more than welcome. Please let us know. There will be a couple of forms to complete that you can collect from the office.

Dates for your diary

25th January forest school starts for a six week block.

8th and 9th February parent consultation evenings – a grid will go up nearer to the time for you to make your appointment.
