Last term the children really enjoyed learning about ‘Children Around the World’ and this term we will be learning about different events in the present and from the past in our topic ‘Light and Ignite. We will be learning about Bonfire night and Guy Fawkes, looking at the Great Fire of London, learning fire safety and moving on to learning about advent and the Christmas story.
In Literacy we will be looking at factual books and powerpoints and learning how to write a factual piece of information. We will be looking at bonfire poems and reading stories about dragons. We will be concentrating on making our sentences more interesting by adding describing words and joining words, as well as our on-going skills of full stops, capital letters, exclamation marks, question marks and finger spaces. If your children do any writing at home please help them to remember these things.
In Numeracy we will be looking at multiplication and telling the time as well as our on-going skills of addition, subtraction and tens and units.
When we do a ‘Big Write’ the children always set themselves a target to work on for next time and they take real pride in the fact that they have completed their writing independently. Whenever they have completed this we put the work on our writing wall in the classroom so please feel free to look at your child’s work with them to see how they are improving each time.
In Science we will be looking at how materials change and the effect that heat can have on them.
Reading at home.
Well done to the children who keep reading at home three times each week. We would just like to clarify exactly what we mean by reading three times at home. If your child has read at school this is not included in their three times at home. Also we understand that children may not want to read their reading book all of the time, but any reading that they do will count towards their three times at home. If they look at one of their own books, a magazine, a poster, a recipe or any kind of writing, include this in their reading record and it will go towards their three times at home. Sorry if there has been any confusion with this.
Homework and Spellings.
We would like to thank parents for taking the time to complete homework with your child. We will continue to be keeping a record of who has returned their homework and at the end of the term they will receive a treat if they return it every week. Homework will continue to be sent home on a Friday and expected to be returned by the following Friday. If you wish to keep the spellings at home until the Friday morning so that your child can keep practising them, we have found that this works well.
Thank you for your support.
