Introducing our new Summer Term topic….’Make a Splash!’
During this topic we will be having lots of fun learning about the different creatures that live under the sea, seaside destinations in the UK and The Titanic. We will also be celebrating the Queens 90th birthday.
Below are the things we will be focusing on each week.
|Week 1||Rainbow fish and Rainbow fish to the rescue. (story)|
|Week 2||Writing week: Rainbow fish and Rainbow fish to the rescue. (story)|
|Week 3||Big Write week – Writing an adventure story (linked to Rainbow Fish)|
|Week 4||Researching and finding out facts about The Titanic.|
|Week 5||End of Key Stage 1 Tests week for English papers|
|Week 6||End of Key Stage 1 Tests week for Maths papers|
|Week 7||Reading & Writing Instructions|
English: This term in English we will be reading under the sea themed stories. One of the main stories that we will be reading is The Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister. Children will have the opportunity to read and compare alternative stories and use these to write their very own adventure story based around the storyline of the Rainbow fish.
The children will also be researching about The Titanic and using the facts that they find to write letters.
Children will be encouraged to write more detailed sentences using a range of conjunctions (and, because, then, so), ambitious vocabulary and a range of punctuation.
The children are trying really hard with their cursive writing and we will be continuing to encourage children to use this throughout their writing.
Maths: This term in Maths the children will be working with two and three digit numbers. We will be using place value and number facts to solve addition and subtraction problems.
The children will be learning to choose and use the appropriate standard units to estimate, measure and compare temperature. During week 2 the children will be solving problems involving addition and subtraction of money, including giving change.
Towards the end of term we will be looking at position and direction; and solving multiplication and division problems.
Homework & Spellings
We would like to thank you for taking the time to complete homework with your child.
We will continue to send homework home every Friday.
Reading at home
Please try to hear your child read at home. Although we teach the children the skills to help them to read, it is essential that they have chance to practice these reading skills at home every day. On Fridays it is reading morning and we will be rewarding the children that have read 3 times a week at home, the children will receive a sticker and a star on the class chart. The children with stars every week will be rewarded with a certificate and a prize at the end of the term.
End of Key Stage 1 Tests
We have decided to complete the End of Key Stage tests over two weeks; we feel that this will be better for the children.
The weeks we will be administering the tests are weeks beginning 9th and 16th May. If you have any questions about the tests then please see Mrs Kirkwood or Mrs Silcock.
Our PE days are Tuesday and Wednesday. Please ensure that your child brings their book bag, water bottle and PE kit to school every day.
Thank you so much for your help and support.
