Literacy: This term in Literacy the children will be reading stories that closely link to our superheroes topic. The children will be discussing the characters and settings in the stories that we will be reading in class. They will be writing their very own superhero adventure story and superhero poem. Our focus in writing will be punctuating sentences correctly and writing extended sentences using a range of connectives and ambitious vocabulary. The children will be encouraged to use a range of punctuation throughout their story writing. Throughout the Literacy units we are focusing on editing and improving our work through ‘Big Write’ sessions. After each ‘Big Write’, Mrs Kirkwood will choose a wizard writer; this is someone who has tried really hard with their writing. The wizard writer’s work will be displayed in the classroom and in the ‘Wizard Writer’ folder.

Spellings: Children will continue to receive new spellings to learn every Friday. Please continue to help your child to practice these spellings ready for their spelling test the following Friday.

Numeracy: This term the children will continue to learn to count in steps of 2, 3, 5 and 10’s from any number. They will be adding and subtracting two digit numbers using different methods. They will be learning to use appropriate standard units to estimate and measure capacity (litres/ml) and read relevant scales to the nearest numbered unit. The children will be learning to recognise, find, name and write fractions. They will be using tally charts to collect data and creating block graphs to show their findings. They will be encouraged to use mathematical vocabulary to describe position, direction and movement.

Homework will still be sent home every Friday and is due in the following Friday. There will also be a chart up in the classroom for homework (near the classroom door), your child will get a star each week for completing their homework and then be rewarded at the end of the term with a prize and certificate if they have completed their homework every week. Comprehension activities will be sent home each week for your child to complete as part of their homework. These activities will help develop your child’s comprehension skills.

Reading at school

We are now having daily guided reading sessions in school. During this time your child may have the opportunity to share their favourite book, comic or magazine with a friend. Your child can bring a magazine, comic or book of their choice from home to read.

Our PE days are Tuesday and Thursday’s; please ensure that your child brings their book bag, water bottle and PE kit to school every day.

Thank you for your support.
