Welcome back, we hope you have enjoyed the summer holidays and are looking forward to a new start in Year 2.
Our topic this term is called ‘Dinosaur Discovery’, during this topic we will be doing lots of exciting activities themed around dinosaurs!
Literacy: This term in Literacy the children will be reading and writing information texts about dinosaurs. Our focus in writing will be writing in full sentences using a capital letter, finger spaces and a full stop. The children will be encouraged to write more detailed sentences using a range of conjunctions (and, because, then, so) and ambitious vocabulary. The children are going to be practicing their cursive handwriting and we are expecting to see them using this in their everyday writing. Throughout the Literacy units we are focusing on editing and improving our work through ‘Big Write’ sessions. After each ‘Big Write’, Mrs Kirkwood will choose a wizard writer; this is someone who has tried really hard with their writing. The wizard writer’s work will be displayed in the classroom and in the ‘Wizard Writer’ folder. Please feel free to look through our folder and look at our fantastic writing!
Your child will receive new spellings to learn every Friday. Please help your child to practice these spellings ready for their spelling test the following Friday.
This term in Numeracy the children will be learning to read and write numbers to 100 in numerals and in words. They will be ordering numbers up to 100 and recognising the place value of each digit in a two and three digit number. They will be learning to solve addition and subtraction problems, measure using a ruler and identify and describe the properties of 2D shapes.
Homework will still be sent home every Friday and is due in the following Friday. There will also be a chart up in the classroom for homework (near the classroom door), your child will get a star each week for completing their homework and then be rewarded at the end of the term with a prize and certificate if they have completed their homework every week.
Reading at home
Please try to hear your child read at home. Although we teach the children the skills to help them to read, it is essential that they have chance to practice these reading skills at home every day. On Fridays it is reading morning and we will be rewarding the children that have read 3 times a week at home, the children will receive a sticker and a star on the class chart. The children with stars every week will be rewarded with a certificate and a prize at the end of the term.
Our PE days are Tuesday and Wednesday. Please ensure that your child brings their book bag, water bottle and PE kit to school every day. Thank you so much for your help and support.
