Super Squirrel Class
Autumn Term 1 topic: Dinosaur Dig
Miss Tingay, Mrs Shaw and Mrs Allan would like to welcome you to Super Squirrel Class in Year 2.

Our first topic is going to be all about Dinosaurs. We will be working on this topic for the next 6 weeks. We started to look at this topic during transition week where the children showed great interest and shared some fantastic ideas. They also helped to create the new shared role play area in the corridor. During this topic, we will cover a variety of dinosaur related things such as; diets, characteristics, body structures and habits. We will also be having a ‘Dinosaur Discovery Day’ where the children will be involved in outdoor learning and the wider curriculum all day. Children will be able to take up the roles of Paleontologists (scientists who study fossils) and gain a better understanding about dinosaurs.

This is an important and exciting year for the children as they will be sitting SAT’s in May. The expectations of their behaviour, attitude to learning and overall attendance is high, however, myself and the year 2 team will ensure that we will do all that we can to make this year a fun, engaging, learning experience for the children. Any additional learning or support you can do at home is important. The more they practice, the more they can consolidate what they have been taught during this term. Your child will also be issued with a ‘Purple Mash’ log in for electronic devices so that they can access a range of learning activities online at home. If you require any additional resources or support, please do not hesitate to ask us!

A note from the teacher: Being a new teacher in Spire Nursery and Infants, I wanted to introduce myself and share a bit about my background in Education. I previously studied an Education degree for 3 years at Derby University before moving on to work for Mencap with children with learning disabilities for 4 years and also as a Teaching Assistant at Parkside for 3 years. Finally, I have just completed my PGCE for qualified teacher status and I am extremely excited to be working with the year 2 team and all staff at Spire.

This term in Maths, the children will be learning about:
• The number system and place value including partitioning two and three digit numbers.
• Solving addition and subtraction problems.
• Measuring the lengths of dinosaur footprints and other body parts.
• Naming and describing the properties of 2D shapes and identifying lines of symmetry.

This term in Literacy, the children will be looking at a variety of texts; fiction and non-fiction. These will include topic related book about dinosaurs. The children will look at a variety of stories from ‘Captain Flinn and the Pirate Dinosaurs’ range, along with creating their own dinosaur adventure stories. The children will also learn about finding information from non-fiction texts and other electronic sources in order to gather facts to create their own non-fiction topic book.

Homework: Reading is expected at least 3 times a week. Spellings will be sent home every Monday and tested the following Monday. Additional homework (Maths or English) will be given to children on Fridays. All completed homework will be recorded on the chart outside the classroom with children receiving prizes and certificates for successful terms. In addition to weekly homework, each child will receive a ‘FUN’ topic related homework project. For example, this term the children will be researching dinosaurs and creating their own using junk materials.

Thank you for your continuing support, the Year 2 team.
