Autumn 1 newsletter

A very warm welcome to Wise Owl Class… Mrs James, Mrs Duncombe-Moore and Mrs Allen are here for everyone; please do not hesitate to ask us for any support or advice.

Our topic for the next 6 weeks is Dinosaur Dig. During transition week, the children shared lots of amazing ideas about what they wanted to find out about. Therefore, during this topic we will be looking closely at dinosaurs’ habits, diets, characteristics and body structures. We will also have a ‘Dinosaur Discovery Day’… WATCH OUT!!! The role-play area will represent an archaeological ‘Dinosaur Dig’. This will allow children to be ‘Palaeontologists’… scientists who study dinosaur bones and fossils.

As in all schools, Y2 will be a challenging time, as the children will be sitting SAT’s in May. There will be high expectations on their attitude, learning, behaviour and attendance. However, I would like to reassure you and your child that we will do everything to make this year a fun, learning experience.

Homework: Reading at least 3 times a week is expected of each child. Spellings will be sent home every Monday and tested in class the following Monday. Additional homework (Maths or English) will be given to children every Friday to consolidate what has been taught in class. All completed homework will be recorded on our ‘star’ reward chart displayed outside the classroom. At the end of the term each child with all stars charts completed, will be presented with a prize and certificate. In addition to weekly homework, each child will receive a ‘FUN’ homework project. For example, this term the children will be researching dinosaurs and creating their own using junk materials.

Dates to remember…

Tuesday 26th September: Y2 parents welcome meeting Friday 29th September: Y2 trip to the Dinosaur Exhibition in Nottingham.

Mathematics

This term in Maths the children will be learning about…

  • The number system and place value including partitioning 2 and 3 digit numbers.
  • To solve addition and subtraction problems.
  • To measure the lengths of dinosaur footprints and body parts.

Please practise the number system and place value using the laminated hundred-square provided… please ask for any extra ideas/support using this.

English

In English, the children will be looking at a variety of texts; fiction and non-fiction. All of the books we look at will have a common theme of dinosaurs. The children will read a range of stories from the ‘Captain Flinn’ collection. This will help them to create their own dinosaur adventure stories for Big Write! The children will also be finding out lots of information about dinosaurs from a range of sources in order to create their own non-fiction book.

Please support their learning in any way you can at home… the more they practise, the more they can consolidate all that has been taught in class. We will also be issuing ‘Purple Mash’ login details so that your child can access many fun activities at home, on-line.

We will be happy to supply any additional resources to support your child’s needs.

Thank you for your continuing support.

Year 2 team.
