Our Autumn term 1 topic is… Ahoy There!
Welcome back, we hope you have enjoyed the summer holidays and are looking forward to a new start in Year 1 with Miss Morris and Miss Siddall.
Our topic this term is called ‘Ahoy There!’. During this topic we will be doing lots of exciting activities themed around pirates! We will be reading the books ‘Pirates Love Underpants’ and ‘The Pirates Next Door’ as well as completing writing activities based around the story. As part of our Geography lessons we will be boarding our class pirate ship and we will be sailing around the world stopping at different countries along the way. The children will also be designing and making their own treasure islands. Towards the end of the term we will be celebrating our topic by having a pirate fun day, full details will be sent home nearer the time.
English: Through English this term the children will be looking at a variety of texts including fiction and non-fiction. All of the books we look at will have a common theme of pirates. The children will be learning to read key words in these texts and short sentences. They will also be learning to write short stories about the text we have read and describing pirates using adjectives. We will be paying particular attention to how letters are correctly formed, how to spell simple words and how to use punctuation in sentences. Wow, we will be learning lots!!!
Throughout the English lessons we will be focusing on editing and improving our work through ‘Big Write’ sessions. After each ‘Big Write’, we will choose a wizard writer; this is someone who has tried really hard with their writing. The wizard writer’s work will be displayed in the classroom and in the ‘Wizard Writer’ folder.
We will dismiss your children out of the blue door in front of the climbing wall in the big playground. Please let us know in advance if someone else will be collecting your child. If you need to speak to a member of staff at the end of the day, we respectfully ask you to wait until all children have been safely dismissed as it is crucial that we give our full attention to the safety of the children at this time.
This term in Maths the children will be learning about place value; they will be learning to read, write and order numbers beyond 20! They will also be learning to say which number is one more and one less than a given number. The children will be learning to do calculations – adding numbers together to find the total. The children will also be learning the value of coins and making combinations when we learn about money.
Your child will receive new spellings to learn every Wednesday. Please help your child to practise these spellings ready for their spelling test the following Wednesday. Your child will be given a spelling sheet with the new words that they need to practise. When the children return the spelling sheet, they need to place it in the homework folder in the classroom. On Wednesdays we will be rewarding children that have completed their spelling sheet. The children will receive a star on the class chart and there will be a prize at the end of the term for the children that have completed their spelling sheet every week.
Reading at home
Please try to hear your child read at home regularly. Although we teach the children the skills to help them to read, it is essential that they have chance to practise these reading skills at home every day. On Fridays it is reading morning and we will be rewarding the children that have read 3 times a week at home, the children will receive a sticker and a star on the class chart. The children with stars every week will be rewarded with a certificate and a prize at the end of the term.
Classroom Helpers – Are you interested in helping in the classroom? Any help would be much appreciated. If you are interested please see Miss Morris or Miss Siddall.
Our PE days are Wednesday and Thursday. Please ensure that your child brings their book bag, water bottle and PE kit to school every day. Thank you so much for your help and support.
