Autumn 2 Newsletter – Reception classes

Welcome back everybody. We hope you have all had a lovely half term and are looking forward to learning lots of new things…

Our new topic is called ‘The Best of British!’

During this topic we will be looking at celebrations from different religions as well as some Great British traditions.

We will have a different focus for each week:

Week 1 Halloween and Diwali
Week 2 Lighting up the sky
Week 3 What is being British?
Week 4 British traditions and sporting heroes
Week 5 Christian Celebrations
Week 6 Christmas
Week 7 Christmas

This term in Numeracy the children will be extending their counting skills by looking at adding and subtracting. We will continue to use and apply our counting and number recognition skills. We will be learning about heavy and light and will even learn how to weigh things using scales. Later on in the term we will also start to look at money. Please support this learning in any way you can at home.

Through Literacy this term the children will be looking at a variety of texts including fiction and non-fiction. Our texts include ’Lighting a Lamp’, ‘This is the Bear and the Scary Night’ and ‘The Nativity’. The children will continue to develop their reading and writing skills through daily phonics sessions and will apply this in their Literacy sessions. We will continue to work on how letters are formed and the children will be encouraged to write for different purposes. We will also be writing letters to Father Christmas and we will be following recipes for baking.

Reading at home

We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support with your child’s reading. It is fantastic to see so many of you reading on a regular basis with your children and changing their book frequently- it really does make such a difference. Please continue to encourage the children to recognise the sounds in words and blend them together for reading.

Physical Education

In PE we will be focusing on dance this half term. The children all need to have their PE kits in school every Monday please. They should have a pair of shorts, plimsolls and a coloured t-shirt dependent on their house team. Please make sure your child’s name is written clearly inside their items to avoid getting mixed up, thank you.

Our Achievement tree

Please remember outside the green gate is Reception’s learning tree. This tree is for you to celebrate your child’s learning with us at school. We would like to know about anything your child has achieved which you are proud of. This may be swimming certificates, dance shows or football trophies. It may be a celebration of something that you notice your child has learnt at school. Please add anything to it that you wish by writing on a leaf or hand print.

Learning Logs

WOW- the children did some fantastic work in their learning logs last term. The children take great pride in these and love sharing them with their peers. It really does add to their learning when these tasks are completed. Please ensure that the children bring them back completed on the Tuesday of the following week. Please can you leave your child’s learning log in school until Thursday each week so we can share homework on a Thursday afternoon, thank you.

Other things to remember:

  • Please try to ensure that your child now has a pair of wellies in school so that we can still go outside whatever the weather.
  • Please join us on Monday 14th November for our Great British Cafe in the school Hall from 2.15pm
  • Don’t forget it is our Christmas Nativity performance soon… You can choose to come and watch the morning or afternoon performance on Tuesday 13th December
